Blackpool isn't immediately associated with quality clubbing, conjuring up images of sticks of rock, bingo and "fun beside the seaside". But The Syndicate seems on a mission to redress the balance, providing an oasis of dance music for 4,500 clubbers every weekend.

With numerous levels, a purpose-built sound-system and a constant stream of celebrity spinners, this place wouldn't seem out of place in Ibiza - it has swallowed up millions of pounds, transforming itself from a crumbling cinema into a gargantuan dance space. There's nowhere else like it in Blackpool, so visiting your auntie Nora should have a silver lining, if you can steal away after dark.

Last week, Sonique brought the house down, proving once again that she remains a DJ of awesome talent. Tonight, club owner and fanatical socialite Fran Cosgrove takes centre stage behind the decks, spinning some funky and crescendo-fuelled house.

The beauty of a venue this size is that there's something for everyone, whether it's house, R'n'B or hip-hop. Arrive early, as it doesn't take long to reach boiling point.

130-140 Church Street, Blackpool, Lancs (01253-753222; www.thesyndicate.org) Sat, 10pm-2am, pounds 10
