DANCE / Stretching it a bit
The Vivarta season of revolutionary South Asian dance at The Place in London signed off this week with the British premiere of Chandralekha's Angika. The Madras-based choreographer is considered the most radical in India. Her stark, modern style breaks away from the mythological basis of Indian classical dance, and uses a 20th-century vocabulary drawn from yoga and martial arts to create amazing geometric forms. As with P Nagendra Rao and T Nandakumar, who are members of the 16-strong company. The Chandralekha Group moves on to the Phoenix Arts Theatre in Leicester (0533 554854) on 16 and 17 Oct, then tours to Bradford and Glasgow.
