With many of the romantic street scenes from the film Bridget Jones's Diary shot nearby on Shad Thames, Tower Bridge is the perfect location for a Valentine's Day event with a difference. For less than a tenner, a couple can enjoy a romantic stroll along the high walkways of London's most distinctive landmark, one that has straddled the Thames since 1894.

Couples - or singletons of a masochistic persuasion - will be invited to ascend the original Victorian staircase of Tower Bridge, and will be rewarded at the top with two glasses of champagne and a spectacular view from 120 feet above the river. The glass-covered walkways overlook the City to the east and St Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London and the Monument to the west. The organisers are happy to remind visitors, who may get carried away with the romance of the occasion, that the walkways are carpeted, just in case they have plans to go down on one knee.

Tower Bridge, London SE1 (020-7407 9191) 5pm-10pm, pounds 8 per couple
