A life in pictures: Britain's oldest cinema hits 100

Almost as old as cinema itself, the Duke of York's Picturehouse in Brighton celebrates its centenary this year.

First opened in September 1910, it was built on the site of the Amber Ales Brewery, whose exterior wall still forms the rear of the auditorium.

Now an arts picture house, it was one of the first cinemas in the world, and the oldest continuously operating purpose-built cinema in Britain. The Grade II-listed building is home to the Brighton Film Festival and, wherever possible, does things the old-fashioned way.
