Avengers: Infinity War scores second biggest opening ever at US box office

The film slots neatly between Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Marvel’s self-proclaimed “most ambitious crossover event in history” is set to pay off in a major way.

Avengers: Infinity War has already earned an incredible $106 million in previews alone, including $39 million from Thursday screenings, making it the second-biggest opening day of all time in the US, right behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The film is currently headed for a $240 million-plus opening weekend which, if achieved, would also hand it the second-highest US opening weekend of all time, Variety reports, close behind 2015’s The Force Awakens with $248 million.

Once more, it would slot right above last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which earned $220 million in its opening weekend. It would also become the highest-earning superhero film of all time.

Infinity War‘s opening has already pushed Disney past $1 billion in domestic revenue for 2018, thanks to Black Panther‘s phenomenal box office success; with Solo: A Star Wars Story and Ant-Man and the Wasp still to come this summer, expect that number to rise much, much higher.

The film has also already earned $178.5 million internationally, opening in 43 different territories.

Infinity War is set to become the sixth film in history to top $200 million in domestic on its opening weekend, joining The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, Jurassic World, The Avengers, and Black Panther.
