High profile stars of the international film world - Leonardo DiCaprio, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Amy Adams to name a few - took to the red carpet ahead of the Baftas at the Royal Opera House tonight (scroll to see pictures).

Kenyan rising star Lupita Nyong'o, who plays Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, arrived in a Christian Dior emerald gown in the hope of picking up the Best Supporting Actress award.

Brad Pitt, who co-produced Steve McQueen's harrowing epic, was joined by his wife Angelina Jolie. Both dressed in tuxedos, the couple spent a long time signing autographs as fans gathered on the carpet raised the decibel level considerably with their screams.

DiCaprio enjoyed chants of "Leo! Leo! Leo" as he walked the carpet, while Captain Phillips star Tom Hanks also received a notably warm reception.

Many US actors had made the effort to fly over for the event at London's Royal Opera House. American Hustle star Bradley Cooper joined director David O Russell, while The Wolf of Wall Street director Martin Scorsese also made an appearance.

Jennifer Lawrence was missing from the red carpet line-up despite being nominated for Best Supporting Actress, meaning she could not be involved in any photobombs this time. The Hunger Games actress crept up on singer Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes in January, pretending to be a monster.
