The annual festival premieres a large range of films across a selection of categories; some are played in competition - the majority of which battle for the coveted Palme d'Or - while others are premiered in the Out Of Competition category.

The film set to open this year's festival in the latter category is Woody Allen's Café Society, which stars Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Blake Lively. Joining the film is Jodie Foster's Money Monster, Steven Spielberg's The BFG and Ryan Gosling-Russell Crowe comedy The Nice Guys from Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang director Shane Black.

The In Competition category includes a varied list of films from notable British, American and international directors. The category, to be judged by a jury presided by the Mad Max director George Miller, includes the new films from Andrea Arnold (American Honey), Pedro Almodóvar (Julieta), Nicolas Winding Refn (The Neon Demon) and the Dardenne Brothers (La Fille Inconnue).

All films will compete alongside Jim Jarmusch's Paterson, Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake and Loving, the next film from Midnight Special director Jeff Nichols.

American filmmaker Jarmusch's Gimme Danger will also be shown at the festival, earning itself a Midnight Screening.
