Captain America: Civil War on track to make over $175 million at the box office in its opening weekend

The film is on course to debut just under Age of Ultron's first-weekend gross

Even with Deadpool and Batman v Superman breaking box-office records earlier this year, Marvel’s latest film looks set to blow both out of the water at the box office, becoming this year's highest grossing film so far.

According to analysts, Captain America: Civil War is on track to make $175 million in North America alone in its first weekend, with some experts believing the film could top $200 million.

If the analysts are correct, the film could end up being the fifth-highest-grossing domestic weekend of all time, beaten only by Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million), Jurassic World ($208.8 million), Avengers ($207.4 million) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million).

With both Avengers films having made so much, this shouldn’t be a huge surprise considering the film is basically Avengers 2.5. Although pegged as a Captain America film, it also stars Robert Downey Jnr’s Iron Man, Scarlett Johnson’s Black Widow and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye.

Civil War currently holds a 94 percent ‘fresh’ rating on aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics praising the film’s fun tone.

Meanwhile, in other Marvel news, Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon recently admitted he felt like a “miserable failure” after releasing the seventh highest grossing film of all time.
