Chadwick Boseman’s brother recalls emotional last conversation before Black Panther star’s death

Boseman died in August from colon cancer, aged 43

Chadwick Boseman’s brother has revealed what was said in his last conversation with the Black Panther star.

In new interviews with the New York Times, Boseman’s siblings remembered their beloved brother who died earlier this year.

Derrick Boseman, the actor’s eldest brother, recounted what would be their final conversation. The pastor remembered “Chad” saying: “Man, I’m in the fourth quarter and I need you to get me out of the game.”

Derrick said that he had asked what his brother meant, “but then realised that he was tired. He was ready to go”.

The pastor continued: “When he told me that, I changed my prayer from, ‘God heal him, God save him,’ to ‘God, let your will be done.’ And the next day he passed away.”

Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, however, chose to keep the news private. 

After his diagnosis, the actor went on to shoot movies during and between surgeries and chemotherapy treatment. His films include Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, 21 Bridges and Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods.

Derrick also praised his brother’s talents, stating: “Chad was gifted. He’s probably the most gifted person I’ve ever met.”

Kevin Boseman, another of the actor’s brothers, told the publication how he was trying to “remember Chad and not Chadwick”.

“There’s just been a lot of Chadwick in the air,” he said. Kevin explained how when one becomes a celebrity, “you have to start sharing that person with the world”. 

He added: “I always endeavoured to just treat him like my brother.”

Boseman died aged 43 from colon cancer on 28 August.
