Frozen producers reveal the movie's original ending

Elsa was originally going to be an evil jilted Snow Queen and not related to Anna

Disney’s colossus animated hit Frozen won the hearts of audiences around the world, the film’s sisters being Disney fan favourites.

However, Elsa wasn’t conceived as the loveable Snow Queen she turned out to be. The character was originally going to be an evil woman, scorned after being jilted at the alter.

“When we started off, Anna and Elsa were not sisters,” producer Peter Del Vecho told Entertainment Weekly. “They weren’t even royal. So Anna was not a princess.

“Elsa was a self-proclaimed Snow Queen, but she was a villain and pure evil — much more like the Hans Christian Andersen tale. We started out with an evil female villain and an innocent female heroine and the ending involved a big epic battle with snow monsters that Elsa had created.”

In numerous drafts, there was a prophecy that declared “a ruler with a frozen heart will bring destruction to the kingdom of Arendelle.” Anna was the innocent heroine while Elsa was the jilted Snow Queen with a frozen heart.

Come the final act, Elsa creates a monstrous army of snow monsters who attack the heroes: to stop the attack, Prince Hans triggers an avalanche that puts Anna, Elsa and all of Arendelle in danger.

Anna convinces the Snow Queen to use her powers to save the kingdom, which she does. The prophecy, it turns out, wasn’t about Elsa at all, but the two-faced Hans.

“The problem was that we felt like we had seen it before,” Del Vecho told the publication. “It wasn’t satisfying. We had no emotional connection to Elsa — we didn’t care about her because she had spent the whole movie being the villain. We weren’t drawn in. The characters weren’t relatable.”
