With just days to go until the film's UK release, dozens of TV trailers for the newly rebooted Ghostbusters have hit the internet, including one which reveals a new, female Slimer.

Despite the original ghost being an amorphous green blob with no defining, gender-based characteristics, the female iteration of the character has red lipstick, eye-liner, cherry cheeks and wig, fitted with a bow.

Like how Chris Hemsworth’s character added bosoms onto the Ghostbusters logo in a previously seen trailer, this seems like yet another swipe at Hollywood and how they expect female characters to look.

The TV spot has since been removed from YouTube, yet screenshots remain available online, such as the one below.

Starring alongside Hemsworth - who play’s the main squad’s secretary - is Melissa McCarthy Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.

Recently, director of the original Ghostbusters, Ivan Reitman, said the backlash surrounding the new film isn’t about women, but instead about reboots.

“I think the lovers of the [original] movie felt there was some kind of sacrilege to re-do it, because it was a seminal part of their moviegoing experience as a 7- or 8-year-old,” he said. “That’s something that can’t be minimised, and I totally respect that love.”

Meanwhile, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray have both publicly praised the film, the latter calling it a “tough movie to pull off” during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel.

Ghostbusters hits UK cinemas 11 July.
