Jason Schwartzman once did Cribs as Louis XVI and it was incredible

Here's the new way to brush up on your history; take a tour of the iconic Palace of Versailles with the last man to be called King of France, Louis XVI.

Or, that is, actor Jason Schwartzman pretending to be Louis XVI while taking a break on the set of Sofia Coppola's 2007 biopic Marie Antoinette to film this absolutely pitch-perfect spoof of MTV's Cribs.

The vid was actually shot by Coppola's brother, and incidentally Schwartzman's cousin, Roman Coppola; who in turn made his debut feature, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, in 2012; you'll probably be more familiar, however, with the Prada Candy ad he co-directed with Wes Anderson, which starred Spectre's Léa Seydoux.

Sofia Coppola's deeply underrated film takes a subtler spin on what Schwartzman's angling for here; dreamily revitalising the tale of France's ill-fated queen with a shoegazer soundtrack and modern dialogue beats. Never interested in idly commemorating the historical past, this is a film whose sole purpose was to clamber inside the head of a young woman torn from her home and thrown head-first into a gilded world of unrivalled luxury and suffocating traditions. It's one of the most energetic, vibrant period pieces to ever hit screens; and Schwartzman's little addendum only adds to the delights this movie brings.
