Johnny Depp’s latest film Mortdecai underperformed at the box office this weekend, making $9.3 million worldwide on an estimated $60 million budget.

The movie sees Depp play an eccentric and moustachioed art dealer in search of a stolen painting, but the Lionsgate film has yet to impress audiences and critics.

Mortdecai marks the worst opening for a major Depp film in 15 years. It follows his other recent box office flops including Transcendence (2014) and The Lone Ranger (2013).

Excluding his cameo in Disney's Into the Woods, Mortdecai is Depp's fifth consecutive opening-weekend bomb.

The actor has steered away from playing signature bizarre characters like Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd – roles that have garnered him success in the past.

Depp’s forthcoming film, Yoga Hosers, tells the story of a man-hunter who teams up with yoga enthusiasts to battle an ancient evil presence.

But the actor's box office success may pick up again when he stars in sequels for Alice in Wonderland and Pirates of the Caribbean – both slated for release in 2016 and 2017.

However, the figures do not seem to faze the actor, who last year said he “doesn’t give a f**k” about how well his movies do at the box office.
