Priyanka Chopra calls for James Bond replacement to be a woman: ‘I would love to throw my name in the mix’

Bond bosses have preivously ruled out the possibility of a 'female Bond'

Priyanka Chopra has doubled down on her pleas to see James Bond played by a woman.

There has been huge speculation over who will step into the coveted role following Daniel Craig’s final outing as the spy in this year’s No Time to Die, with some fans and actors calling for his replacement to be a woman.

Chopra told Metro: “I mean it’s not up to me to make it a thing. It’ s up to people to be ready to watch a female Bond.”

“We can keep talking about it, but someone’s got to make it,” said Chopra. “And if it ever gets made, I would obviously love to throw my name in the mix, as I have, as I will.”

The 38-year-old has previously been vocal about wanting to portray 007.

She added: “But I’ll just be a champion of being able to see a female version of really iconic characters. Just for the ability to give the opportunity to a female character to be able to enjoy that, as well.” 

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy, who has also been floated as a potential replacement, has also voiced his support for casting a female actor in the role. Murphy told GQ: “It’s incredibly flattering to be in that conversation. I think it should be a woman [next].” 

James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, however, has ruled out the possibility that the character could ever be played by a woman.

Discussing potential incarnations of the spy in January last year, Broccoli said: “He can be of any colour, but he is male.”

“I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters,” she added. “I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.

It was announced last month that No Time to Die has been delayed for a third time and will now debut globally on 8 October.

The film was originally slated for an April 2020 release.
