You have to appreciate Sausage Party's balls.
In addition to its very bold existence as a raunchy 15-certificate animation about supermarket foods, its masterminds - Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg - believe the hit comedy to be worthy of awards.
Sony Pictures has launched an official campaign to get Sausage Party nominated for an Oscar. If successful, it'll be the second R-rated animation to receive the honour (the first being Charlie Kaufman film Anomalisa just last year).
Sony chief Tim Rothman certainly fancies the film's chances: "Academy members are way smarter and more forward-thinking than people realize," he said. "They want to recognize bold, original, risky breakthroughs, and that’s what Sausage Party is, however subversive. Plus, it’s just plain cool."
When considering other animated films in contention this year - Zootropolis, Pixar sequel Finding Dory. - it seems like Sausage Party's chances are, indeed, burnt.

However, there's hope yet: perhaps one of the film's memorable songs will scoop a nomination in the Original Song category.
The graphic film - which became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time - includes voicework from Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek and Edward Norton as a bagel named Sammy Bagel Jr.
