Space Jam (1996) - trailer

A plot for the long awaited Space Jam sequel has been revealed.

The sequel of the much-loved 1996 original was confirmed back in September 2018, with Lakers legend LeBron James cast in what is his first major acting role.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Space Jam: A New Legacy will see James play “a heightened version of himself” who struggles to relate to his young son Dom (played by Cedric Joe) who is more interested in “creating games than playing them”.

The outlandish synopsis reads: “When Dom’s tech skills draw the attention of a CGI humanoid named Al G Rhythm (Don Cheadle), the father-son duo get sucked into the Warner 3000 entertainment ‘Sever-verse’, with the AI kidnapping Dom in the hopes of stealing some of the King’s [a nickname for James] followers.”

Speaking to the publication, Cheadle said he does not consider his character to be “a bad guy” but rather “an AI with a chip on his shoulder”.

When James is sucked into the Warner Bros server, he travels through some of the studio’s most famous films in order to find characters from the Looney Tunes universe and enlist their help to save his son.

A New Legacy was filmed over the last two NBA (National Basketball Association) off-seasons and is slated for release on 16 July 2021.
