The Hateful Eight, The Revenant and others leak online ahead of release

Around this time last year, Sony was attacked by numerous hackers, with both emails and films being leaking online.

Some of their biggest movies of the year including Fury, Annie, Mr. Turner and Still Alice began circulating torrent sights, all in high-quality (not just people sneaking cameras into cinemas).

Unfortunately for the big studios, a huge number of Oscar hopefuls have found their way online before their January theatrical releases including Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring The Revenant and Rocky sequel Creed.

According to Variety, The Hateful Eight was downloaded 739,580 times in the space of 24 hours from a single IP address, while The Revenant logged 569,153. Creed meanwhile has been downloaded just under half a million times, with 499,082.

What makes this even more frightening for Hollywood is that these are only a selection of the huge films currently floating around these websites.

Joy, Steve Job, Carol, The Heart of the Sea, Carol, Room, Legend and Brooklyn are also doing the rounds online.

Many of these films would have found their way online due to people pirating Oscar screeners.

This is one of the many reasons JJ Abrams stopped Star Wars: The Force Awakens being put up for any awards as he was afraid plot details would leak online.

Game of Thrones season five leaked earlier this year due to review DVD’s being sent out to journalists. HBO have since changed to streaming in order to prevent piracy, and it is likely other places will follow suit.
