The scariest horror films, according to everyone

You can filter them depending on whether you're after something gory, disturbing or suspenseful

Our attempts to crowdsource reviews of movies in general (IMDb lists, Meteoritic user polls) aren’t always that successful because dramas, thrillers, comedies etc are so subjective and combine such a vast array of elements and emotions.

Horror, however, is a bit easier to break down into core components. This is where Reel Scary comes in, a new site that allows users to rate movies out of 10 for ‘Gore’, ‘Disturb’, ‘Suspense’ and the optional ‘Scream Factor’ and ‘Nightlight Factor’, which are weighted less in the overall aggregate.

The site has already attracted thousands of ratings, and lists horrors both by their overall score and based on each sensation. Lars von Trier’s unsettling Antichrist features on the ‘Disturb’ list for instance, while several Saw films appear on the ‘Gore’ one.

After several requests for it, the creators are working on adding in a scale for ‘Jump Scares’.

You can view the top 10s at the time of writing below, and 18 films that genuinely scared us here.
