Timothee Chalamet is Edgar Scissorhands in new Cadillac advert

Tim Burton has responded to seeing his classic film Edward Scissorhands parodied in a Cadillac commercial.

The advert, which saw Timothee Chalamet take on the main role of Edgar originally portrayed by Johnny Depp, was one of many to air during Sunday night’s Super Bowl (7 February).

Burton revealed to The LA Times that he had given his seal of approval to the commercial idea prior to its production.

The filmmaker shared his appreciation for the commercial, stating: “It’s rare when a work you’re proud of continues to live on and evolve with the times, even after 30 years.”

Edward Scissorhands – which starred Depp and Winona Ryder as mismatched lovers – was released in 1990, and quickly garnered a large fanbase.

“I’m glad to see Edgar coping with the new world!” said Burton. “I hope both fans and those being introduced to Edward Scissorhands for the first time enjoy it.”

As in the Nineties movie, the advert sees Chalamet play a young man with scissors for hands. Ryder – who had played Kim in the original film – stars in the clip as his mother.

The commercial also uses the original film theme composed by Danny Elfman.
