Tomb Raider reboot: Daisy Ridley has confirmed talks over Lara Croft role

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor stated she's in the running to star in the video game reboot

Daisy Ridley has confirmed she is in talks to star as Lara Croft in theTomb Raider reboot.

She confirmed the ongoing rumours to The Hollywood Reporter while attending the Empire Awards in London; stating that though she's yet to be formally offered the role, there "have been conversations". She stated; "I'm waiting for someone to say, 'I want you, let's do it'."

Winning Best Female Newcomer at the ceremony, and with Rey's key role within the Star Wars universe looking to develop even further with Episode VIII, this is likely but the first in a whole slew of high-profile roles for the rising star. Though currently busy shooting Episode VIII, Ridley has revealed there's certainly room in her schedule for Tomb Raider. "I'm trying to fill up my calendar," she said.

The interest in a younger actress indicates the new film will be an adaptation of the 2013 reboot of the game; which re-established the origins of Croft and revamped the series with a grittier, more realistic feel. Though Ridley commented that there's no script yet in place, it'll certainly allow a fresh break from its cinematic predecessors, too: the Angelina Jolie-starring 2001 film, and its critically-maligned 2003 sequel, The Cradle of Life.

And it seems as if Ridley's already got major support in her corner, from none other than Star Wars co-star John Boyega. Picking up the Empire award for Best Male Newcomer that night, the actor enthused; "I played Tomb Raider the game, it’s a new take and I think the movies are going to be based on that version. But I texted Daisy [and] was like, ‘This is you!’ and ‘You need to get on that because you could be Lara Croft.’ She should be."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out as a major winner at the awards; also picking up Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film, Best Visual Effects, and Best Director for J.J. Abrams.

Tomb Raider is set a 2017 release.
