The "Twilight" vampire romance sequel "New Moon" raked in 140.7 million dollars in its premiere weekend, a spectacular showing for the cult series, Exhibitor Relations said Sunday.

Summit Entertainment's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which opened at 12:01 am on Friday netted 140.7 million dollars outpacing its closest rival, "The Blind Side," with 34.5 million, by over four-to-one in ticket sales, the industry report said.

Hollywood.com had predicted the vampire flick was set to join only a dozen other films to have sold 100 million dollars worth of tickets in a single weekend.

In third place, end-of-the-world film "2012" brought in 26.5 million dollars, more than double its next-runner-up, "Planet 51," with 12.6 million.

"Disney's A Christmas Carol" earned 12.2 million trailed by abuse saga "Precious" with 11 million, and military intel flick "The Men Who Stare at Goats" with 2.7 million in the number seven spot.

"Couples Retreat" earned another 1.9 million for a strong total to date of 105 million; followed by "The Fourth Kind" with 1.7 million and "Law Abiding Citizen" with 1.6 million.
