The Criterion Collection has released a video of Matthew McConaughey's first audition for what would become the iconic role of Wooderson in Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused, seeing him lend his southern drawl to the now classic lines.

This was long, long before the McConnaisance, when a 23-year-old Matthew happened to meet the film's casting director at a bar where his bartender buddy would give him free beer.

He proved a natural in the audition, and after Dazed and Confused drove to Hollywood to make it as an actor.

Sadly there's no "alright, alright alright" here, but we do see the film's two other big catchphrases: "Say man, you got a joint? It'd be a little cooler if you did" and "That's what I love about high school girls man, I keep getting older, they stay the same age."

Wiley Wiggins was also there for the script read, who went on to play Mitch Kramer in the film.

Linklater earned a Golden Globe on Sunday night for his latest movie Boyhood, which was made pain-stakingly over 12 years.
