"I saw the end of the world."

The ominous words that open the brand new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse; a spectacular, atmospheric preview of what may be the darkest chapter yet in the mutant franchise. The threat? Oscar Isaac's menacing Apocalypse, the most powerful being within the comics' universe. Ancient civilisations worshipped him as a god, yet the film now finds him awakening after several millennia of slumber, and not liking what he sees. Bent on wiping out the humanity he now deems insufficient, Apocalypse has recruited a team of four mutants for his own horseman of the apocalypse; Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Archangel (Ben Hardy), and a disillusioned Magneto (Michael Fassbender).

The new trailer also brings plenty of attention to Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and his crew, with Mystique once more taking what seems like a central role in proceedings (it surely helps to have a mega-star like Jennifer Lawrence in the role). Also returning are Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, and Lucas Till as Havok.

We're also offered a glimpse of newcomers Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan taking on the younger versions of Jean Grey and Cyclops, once played by Famke Janssen and James Marsden; that all important laser-eyes shot included for good measure. On top of that, there's Kodi Smith-McPhee in all his Nightcrawler makeup glory and the debut of fan favourite Jubilee (Lana Condor).

Then there are those few, final shots: is Professor X in danger of being corrupted by Apocalypse's powers? Is that the reason for the sudden hairstyle change? Whatever the reason, at least we're getting the one thing we've all been waiting for: Professor X is bald once more.
