This patchwork documentary eloquently details how the celebrated ballet company survived the death of impresario Serge Diaghilev in 1929. After much in-fighting the company split into the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and Colonel W de Basil's Original Ballet Russe, but their fortunes diverged as one sought the life-raft of American money and the other fought the rising waves of bankruptcy. Mixed in with the archive footage are present-day interviews with stars of the Ballets Russes, some of them now in their eighties and nineties.
