Gael García Bernal, in his best role since Y Tu Mamá También, plays Rene, a skateboarding advertising hotshot tasked with running the 1988 “NO” campaign against General Pinochet's vicious Chilean dictatorship.

“We have to find a product that is attractive to people,” he maintains to his earnest employers – and sets about producing jolly jingles and “We Are the World”-style songs to put the regime-toppling message across. Pablo Larraín's intelligent drama shuns belligerence, favouring a muted tone, and it's all the more powerful for it.
