Bailee Madison's Sally, a gloomy, medicated and inquisitive eight-year-old, has been sent to live with her architect father, Alex (Guy Pearce), and his new partner, Kim (Katie Holmes), at spooky Blackwood Manor.

A gruesome opening scene, involving the removal of some teeth, lets us know that this is no place for children, and when the head gardener gets mauled by some fanged beasties, it's probably time to take note of Sally's pleas that murderous goblins are lurking in the basement.

This competent chiller, written and produced by Guillermo del Toro, is a remake of a TV movie that terrified Del Toro in his childhood.
