It’s impossible not to think highly of Portuguese painter Paula Rego after watching this compelling documentary, which offers a glimpse into an immodestly-portrayed and enigmatic artistic world; for starters, Rego is a delight to watch.

As she speaks frankly about her childhood, you become aware that she is not just a storyteller on canvas, she is unpretentious, and genuinely funny. An interesting addition is a chapter about her instantly- recognisable model, Lila Nunes. The best thing about Telling Tales is how well it captures this artist’s dynamic, vivacious work. “I could never paint still life,” she says “it just wouldn’t work.”
