DVD: Up, For retail & rental (Walt Disney)
An animated film with a more nuanced reflection on birth, death and love than your average art-house flick? It can only be this Pixar release, nominated for five Oscars.
It tells the story of Carl Fredricksen, 78-year-old widower and all-round curmudgeon (voiced by Ed Asner), who takes flight by attaching hundreds of helium balloons to his homestead. Others tag along, but it's Carl, for whom the journey is the destination, that is the heart of this three-Kleenex cartoon.
