Solace, film review: Anthony Hopkins is in a scene-stealing groove but this is overcooked

Solace is fussily directed and far-fetched

A new serial killer movie with Anthony Hopkins should be a treat. Hopkins is in a scene-stealing groove but Solace turns out to be an overcooked affair, fussily directed and far-fetched.

Hopkins plays Dr John Clancy, a former FBI analyst prised out of retirement when a serial killer runs amok.

Solace effectively establishes a brooding mood, but it's when Clancy sees too far into the future and the film-makers venture into metaphysics that it begins to fall apart.
