In Brief
Sir: Oliver Kamm should scrutinise the oil-for-food deal for more than a moment (letter, 28 June). Kofi Annan's reports have been quite clear that it does not work. Because of severe damage to infrastructure, continued bombing, lack of oil spare parts and deliberate delays by Americans within the Security Council 661 Committee charged with overseeing the deal, Iraq simply cannot pump enough oil to generate sufficient revenue to pay for the distribution of what meagre humanitarian supplies have been agreed. Meanwhile 4,000 infants die every month.
