Letter: GM crop secrets
Sir: The Norfolk farmer whose GM crops were damaged by Greenpeace protesters is well aware of their trespass on his land, but he appears to be totally unaware that the pollen from these crops may in effect be trespassing on the land and property of others. Usually this is of little concern, but in this case the transfer of a gene for herbicide-resistance to other plants could cause irreversible damage to the agricultural economy.
The farmer is reported to see this incident as a test of "whether we want democratic government in this country or anarchy". Unfortunately the GM issue has seen scant application of democratic procedure. There has not been a full parliamentary debate on this matter, and certainly no free vote.
