Letter: Images of Islam

Sir: Robert Fisk refers to the grotesque portrayal in Western media of Muslims of the Middle East. It is not just they who suffer.

Because I wear a headscarf, I am very visibly Muslim and so frequently receive verbal abuse from people who see it as some sort of invitation to vent their racist views. However deep my roots sink into British soil I am left with the impression that it is now my religion and not my colour that prevents me from being able to live my life free of tension.

I once saw the shattering of people's preconceptions of me as a challenge to be tackled with determination and wit, but find it increasingly disheartening and wearisome.
