Letter: In Brief
Sir: Your report (Media, 31 August) on John Humphrys' possible successor on the Today programme sounds ominous. Suggestions that the programme needs to be more "accessible" sound suspiciously like a euphemism for dumbing down, especially when Edward Stourton is described as "too highbrow" and "too dry". To consider lucidity and intelligence not accessible is very worrying. How long before R4 goes the way of BBC1?
