Sir: Your comparison of the content of radio programmes in 1979 and today misses the point. The greatest "dumbing down" has occurred elsewhere.

Twenty years ago you did not speak on the radio unless you could speak properly. Now we have endless interviews (often repeating news we have just heard) in which the speakers cannot get a sentence out without "yer know", "if you like" and "know what I mean?" More dumbing down occurs between programmes with endlessly repeated trailers which we do not need.
