Sir: As an old Mancunian , I was delighted to read Howard Jacobson's excellent piece "My Manchester" (3 December). A couple of still vivid recollections from my own Manchester youth: the late C P Scott wearing a splendid plus-fours tweed suit, riding his reinforced-frame Raleigh bicycle along Cross Street to the Manchester Guardian office; and a beshawled and beclogged mother commanding one of her errant, barefooted brood, "Come 'ere, Albert, and 'ave yer 'end smacked."
