Sir: Who are these sad souls who calculate that pounds 500m of business was lost because people broke off work to view the eclipse? They are probably the same people who know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. What counterbalancing value might they put on the boost to morale among staff surprised to find their employers encouraging them to take a break? At my workplace, Ordnance Survey in Southampton, 1,300 staff were not only offered a break but were each presented with an ice cream by management as they left the building!
