When Kanye West was announced as a headline act at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, furious music fans declared the US rapper wasn’t “rock” enough to warrant the top slot. Festivalgoers might need a strong cup of tea and a sit down, then, when they discover another big name that the event will be playing host to.

The Women’s Institute has revealed it will be making its debut appearance this year, serving up tea and cake to hungry revellers.

Members of Somerset WI will be setting up their tea and cake stand in the festival’s Green Fields area. They said they expect to serve more than 1,000 helpings of home-baked treats every day to peckish passers-by.

"We might do more, we just don't know, but we won't run out of tea and cake - we're the WI," Katie Newell, from Puriton and District WI, told the BBC.

The tea tent will be run by a troupe of “lovely ladies” from 10am until 7pm each day.

WI members across the county have already rolled up their sleeves to begin preparing a "phenomenal number of cakes" to freeze ahead of the sold-out festival, Ms Newell said.

"We don't know how many we'll sell but who doesn't need a cup of tea and a slice of cake at some point after a big party - it's the best way to chill out after you've been dancing," she added.

Ms Newell said the organisation, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, wanted to demonstrate how “progressive” it was.

"We want to show everybody the amazing work the WI does and Glastonbury Festival seemed like a really good way for us to be represented," she said.
