Auf Wiedersehen, Pet: Justin Bieber's former pet monkey Mally moved from quarantine into German zoo

Justin Bieber’s former pet monkey is now officially a naturalised German after he was moved from quarantine into new quarters at a zoo.

The six-month-old capuchin monkey Mally has moved into the Serengeti Park, Hodenhagen, north Germany, months after being seized by customs officials when the Canadian pop star failed to produce the correct documentation for the creature to enter the country.

Fabrizio Sepe, the zoo’s manager, said: “Mally is a clever little guy and we’re confident that he will settle in quickly.”

Mally was transferred to the zoo last month from a Munich animal shelter where he was kept after being seized by German customs on 28 March.

A statement from the shelter said the monkey should not have been kept as a pet and was too young to have been taken away from its mother. Experts say capuchin monkeys should be kept in groups as they are sociable animals.

After Mally was seized by German officials Bieber was given several weeks to produce the health papers required to get him back, but failed to do so.

Last month the pop star urged critics to focus on the “craft” of his music rather than his offstage antics.

He said: “This is not a gimmick, and I’m an artist, and I should be taken seriously. And all this other bull should not be spoken of.”
