James will open this summer's Glastonbury Festival, ahead of headline performances by Muse, Adele and Coldplay.

The Manchester rockers best known for hits "Laid" and "Sit Down" will take to The Other Stage at 11am on Friday 24 June for the first set of the weekend. Past years have seen high profile bands like Kaiser Chiefs and The Charlatans kick off proceedings.

Frontman Tim Booth revealed the news on BBC Radio 5 Live, promising to "cut the ribbon and smash the champagne on the ship".

The full line-up is expected in April, with PJ Harvey, ZZ Top, Jess Glynne and Jeff Lynne's ELO already confirmed.

Adele announced her booking live on stage in London as part of her 25 world tour before organiser Emily Eavis described the "great honour" on Twitter.

The "Hello" singer has already hit out at critics calling her "boring", branding them "more f**king boring for moaning about me headlining".
