Jeremih’s family has shared an update on the singer’s health after he was admitted to hospital last week with coronavirus.

The Chicago musician is on a ventilator to assist with his breathing, after suffering complications from the virus.

His family told CNN that the 33-year-old’s case is “rare for a young man his age without underlying conditions”.

“The family believes daily prayers to God,” the statement reads. “A great team of doctors and nurses is helping him pull through.”

“He’s not out of the woods yet, but progress is being made,” the statement continued. “The family and friends are praying that he starts breathing on his own soon, and makes a full recovery.”

The family also wanted to remind the world that Covid-19 “is real and not to be taken lightly”.

“Also, it’s important for people infected to quarantine and let their families and friends know asap,” they said. “There’s no shame in contracting Covid-19, and people that have it need to be responsible and considerate of others.”

A viral tweet from a fan posted on 14 November echoed Jeremih’s family’s sentiment, commenting: “Jeremih is in ICU fighting for his life. He isn’t over the age of 40. To the young people that are acting as if Covid-19 is like the common cold, please understand that it’s not. It affects everyone differently which is more reason why you should take it seriously.”

At the time of writing, the post had received more than 40,000 likes.

Fellow artists including Big Sean, 50 Cent, Chance the Rapper and Toni Braxton are among those to have shared messages of support for Jeremih.
