Viola Beach receive posthumous UK top 20 hit after members killed in car crash

Viola Beach, the indie band whose four members died in a car crash last weekend, along with manager Craig Tarry, have achieved a posthumous top 20 hit.

'Swings & Waterslides' debuts at number 11 in the Official UK Singles chart, following a campaign from stars including Liam Gallagher and The Stone Roses, who urged music fans to get the song to No 1. The song briefly topped the iTunes chart during the week.

Kris Leonard, 20, River Reeves, 19, Jack Dakin, 19, Tomas Lowe, 27, and Tarry, 33, all died after their car plummeted 80ft off a highway bridge in the early hours of Saturday in Sodertalje near Stockholm, Sweden.

Viola Beach are the first UK guitar band to reach the top 20 with their debut single in more than a year. The band had received support from BBC Introducing and were on the verge of enjoying mainstream success. Proceeds from the single will be donated to the families of the band members and their manager.

Danish quartet Lukas Graham maintained their lead at the top of the singles chart with '7 Years'. Adele’s 25 returned to the top of the albums chart for an eighth week, despite a performance at the Grammy awards marred by technical difficulties.
