Spontaneous street party takes place in Brixton to remember local boy David Bowie
Hundreds gathered in Bowie’s hometown of Brixton to pay tribute to the cultural icon.
On Monday morning, it was announced that David Bowie had died at the age of 69 following a “courageous” 18-month battle with cancer.
By the evening, hundreds braved the dropping temperatures and gathered in his hometown of Brixton for an impromptu street party.
Two celebrations took place in the area: one at the now-iconic mural opposite Brixton station, where television crews battled with fans for a space to pay tribute.
The other, larger, celebration was further down Brixton Road at the Ritzy Cinema.
The cinema paid tribute with this simple message: "David Bowie, our Brixton boy, RIP.”
The gathering which was organised on Facebook, saw crowds merrily dancing to a whole host of classics from Bowie’s vast catalogue.
And when the speakers were shutdown by authorities, the crowd resorted to having a good old fashioned sing-song, with classics like Star Man and Space Oddity sung at full volume.
Tonight, in Brixton, all the children boogied.
