SUSAN SARANDON deservedly won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the searing film about capital punishment, Dead Man Walking (10pm FilmFour, right). In this story based on the real-life exploits of Sister Helen Prejean, she plays a nun who risks public vilification by befriending a repellent killer (a mesmerising study in evil from Sean Penn) on Death Row. Director Tim Robbins, Sarandon's real-life husband, invests proceedings with a powerful - if occasionally grim - sense of intensity.

Former model Cameron Diaz is not just a pretty face - she has also shown a talent for quirky comedy in There's Something About Mary. She stars opposite Harvey Keitel in Head Above Water (11.45pm Sky Premier), a black comedy from Jim Wilson about a couple trying to dispose of a corpse.
