Preview: First Call, Last Call
Leonard Bernstein's most famous musical is the masterpiece that is West Side Story. Yet just one year earlier he wrote Candide. The score - full of opera pastiches, larky company numbers and a choral finale of matchless power - is a wow, yet the non-musical material is famously intransigent. It's had more rewrites than any piece in musical theatre history. But if anyone can make it work, it's Trevor Nunn, who, alongside John Caird, was the man behind the recent Oklahoma! Nunn's hot cast includes Simon Russell Beale (above) and Beverley Klein, plus Denis Quilley, who was in the London run back in Fifties.

Taking a break from the silver screen, Ewan McGregor continues his stage portrayal of an embittered art student as Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs (above) moves to the Comedy Theatre. David Halliwell's play sees McGregor's character taking revenge on the art-school authorities who slighted him, supported by a fascist "army" of disillusioned social misfits. You'll need to act fast to get tickets for the transfer of Denis Lawson's production, following its sell-out run in Hampstead.
