Play of the week: A Mad World, My Masters, Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon
After the National Theatre's hit Goldoni update, One Man, Two Guvnors, the RSC and Sean Foley have relocated Thomas Middleton's city satire to a mid-1950s Soho of criminality, pervy repression and moral laxity.
The milieu proves liberating for Middleton's world of venal and venereal goings-on in a play that is stiff with entendres. Hustled along by blowsy jazz and jiving, the production revels in the play's relish for the con-artistry of frauds and in its knowing theatricality.
Richard Goulding gives a performance of comic flair as Dick Follywit and Steffan Rhodi excels as nerdy husband Mr Littledick. The RSC has a whopping success on its hands.
