Hamilton confirmed to hit London's West End in October 2017

Broadway musical Hamilton is finally coming to London’s West End next year.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play created by and starring Lin-Manuel Miranda will open at the Victoria Palace Theatre in October 2017.

Renowned producer Cameron Mackintosh is spending £30 million refurbishing the theatre ready for the production, according to Daily Mail theatre critic Baz Bamigboye, with tickets going on sale this October. The show’s UK website will go live at noon on Monday, when fans can sign up for priority ticket information.

Directed by Thomas Kail, Hamilton tells the story of US founding father Alexander Hamilton, an orphaned Caribbean immigrant who rose the political ranks to become treasury secretary. Its hip-hop music and high energy have been acclaimed in rave reviews from theatre critics.

The New York Times told readers that if ever there were a Broadway show worth “mortgaging your house and leasing your children” for, Hamilton was it, while The Wall Street Journal branded it “the best and most important Broadway musical of the past decade”.

Hamilton looks set to break records at Sunday night’s Tony Awards, where it is expected to pick up many of the 16 gongs it is nominated for. US president Barack Obama is a big fan of the musical, with the cast performing “Alexander Hamilton” at The White House earlier this year.

Miranda is looking forward to seeing how Hamilton is received by UK audiences. “I am so excited!” he told London Theatre. “We can’t wait! We’ll get the same questions: ‘It’s so American, will it play?’ But hopefully if we’ve done our jobs well this story of revolution and telling your own story will also play well over there as well. Also, we really take the piss out of King George so I can’t wait to see how that plays!”

Miranda, who also composed In the Heights, is rumoured to be stepping down in July to focus on writing the music for upcoming Disney film Moana but this is yet to be confirmed.
