Dame Barbara Windsor dies aged 83

Barbara Windsor’s husband has paid tribute to the EastEnders star after she died, aged 83.

Scott Mitchell has been updating Windsor’s fans on her health since she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014.

In August, he announced that he had placed her into a care home the previous month upon the advice of her neurologist.

Mitchell said of his decision: “It feels like another chapter gone.”

Now, paying tribute to his wife, he said:  “It is with deep sadness that I can confirm that my darling wife Barbara passed away at 8.35pm on Thursday 10 December at a London care home.

“Her passing was from Alzheimer’s/dementia and Barbara eventually died peacefully and I spent the last seven days by her side.”

Back in August, he told The Sun he felt he was on “an emotional rollercoaster” and felt like he was already “bereaving” his wife.

Mitchell, who was married to Windsor for 20 years, added: “It’s always been my biggest fear that one day I would have to take her somewhere and she’d be thinking: ‘Why would he do this to me?’”

He previously said the actor regularly felt “unsettled” and had trouble walking around their house.

Many of Windsor’s EastEnders co-stars have paid tribute to the star who also appeared in numerous Carry On films.
