BBC journalist Ben Brown apologises after being caught yawning on the job: ‘The perils of live TV!’

Broadcaster was filmed with mouth wide open during bagpipes segment

BBC News journalist Ben Brown has apologised after he was caught doing a huge yawn live on air on Sunday (20 December).

The broadcaster was filmed yawning as a news item on bagpipes played. 

Realising he was back on camera with his mouth wide open, Brown looked a little flustered and hurriedly sat up straight in his chair.

On Twitter shortly afterwards, Brown wrote: “Apologies for this dear viewers – I was at the end of a long shift after a 5am start when the director cut to me by mistake. The perils of live TV!”

Sharing the video on Twitter, one person joked: “Seems like tier 4 fatigue is getting to the BBC News presenters.”

Over the weekend, Boris Johnson revealed tier four rules for London and large areas of the South East, citing a new strain of coronavirus that is thought to be more contagious.  

The new measured will affect more than 16 million people, with Matt Hancock suggesting they could last months.

“Given how much faster this new variant spreads, it is going to be very difficult to keep it under control until that vaccine is rolled out,” he said.
