Billy Connolly: Sheridan Smith and Elton John lead tributes to comedian in documentary marking end of stand-up career
ITV special commemorated the end of comedian’s stand-up career due to Parkinson’s Disease
Sheridan Smith and Sir Elton John were among the celebrities to pay tribute to Sir Billy Connolly in the documentary It’s Been a Pleasure.
The Scottish comedian, actor, musician and artist retired from his decades-long stand-up career in 2018 following his Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis in 2013.
An emotional special – titled It’s Been A Pleasure – that aired on ITV last night (28 December) honoured his monumental contribution to comedy.
The hour-long feature looked back at the legendary comedian’s career and legacy, and featured interviews with some of Connolly’s biggest fans and friends.
The “Crocodile Rock” singer spoke fondly of Connolly, stating: “He’s had an incredible life. When he looks back at his life he’ll be incredibly proud of what he’s done.”
Benidorm star Smith tearfully revealed to viewers that she had named her son Billy, who was born in May earlier this year, after the beloved comedian.
Dustin Hoffman, who had worked with Connolly in the 2012 comedy-drama Quartet, added: “I want him to be around for a long, long time.”
“When I think about him deeply, I find it very moving,” said fellow comedian Russell Brand.
Hollywood star Whoopi Goldberg spoke about Connolly's artistry, while comedian Sir Lenny Henry enthused about his universal appeal.
Irish comedian and actor Aisling Bea praised the comedian’s acting skills, a compliment that was supported by footage of Connolly performing his famous wildebeest sketch, in which he reenacts a nature documentary about lions stalking wildebeests.

Connolly had fans in tears as the 78-year-old opened up about his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
Speaking to the camera, he said: “It’s got me and it will get me and it will end me, but that’s ok with me.”
