CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper has apologised after losing his cool with a pro-Donald Trump commentator appearing on his show.

Jeffrey Lord was responding to questions about the President on Friday night (19 May) when Cooper stated: "If he took a dump on his desk, you would defend it'

Cooper had originally asked Lord whether he believed that Trump should be conversing with the Russians about the fired James Comey while being investigated by the FBI, saying: "You can't really defend it, in all fairness - you can't defend what the President of the United States just said."

Lord replied: "I don't care what he says to the Russian prime - to the Russians. I mean, he's the President of the United States. If he wants to say that, if Barack Obama wants to say whatever, if George Bush says 'I looked in his eyes and' – "

It was here where Cooper interrupted Lord and made the controversial remark, and continuing: "I don't know what he would do that you would not defend."

Cooper has since apologised for the remark, both verbally and on Twitter.

Earlier this month, Cooper hit headlines after giving Kellyanne Conway an exasperated eyeroll as she defended Trump's decision to fire Comey.
